One question we’ve been asked a lot since opening is why we decided to call ourselves OmNom Zero Waste. The answer is that it reflects our 3 core aims as a business.

Improve wellness in the community through nutrition and promote the 5 Ways to Wellbeing

This is the ‘Om’ - a light hearted nod to wellbeing which is about how you feel and how well you function. To improve wellness through nutrition OmNom has a focus on organic produce. This reduces exposure to the amount of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers that are used in conventional farming as well as artificial flavourings and preservatives. It also promotes higher standards of animal welfare for livestock. We appreciate not everyone can shop organic all of the time, but even a couple of meals a week (or month) will reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals in your food. As the saying goes ‘You are what you eat’ so if you nourish yourself with goodness we believe this builds a good foundation to be able to tackle everything else life throws at you.

The 5 Ways to Wellbeing are a set of evidence-based actions developed by the New Economics Foundations which, if applied, can improve mental and emotional wellbeing. They are:

Raise awareness of household food waste and its contribution to climate breakdown

This is the ‘Nom’ - Globally 1/3 of all edible food grown for human consumption is wasted every year, that’s about 1.3 billion tonnes. It generates approximately 3.3 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases. This involves many stages across the supply chain but for us at home we can do our small bit by being more mindful about what food we buy and how we use it. By enabling people to buy as much or as little as they need, we hope this will reduce household food waste whilst encouraging people to reconnect with their food and try new recipes to broaden their diets (and impress their family & friends!)
Our zero waste ethos is simple:
Refuse • Reduce • Reuse • Recycle • Rot

Enable the community to reduce single use plastic packaging waste and become more conscious consumers

By brining your own containers to fill up at OmNom, you are avoiding many items of single use plastic you would normally find buying packaged alternatives. This in turn reduces the amount you’re sending to landfill. By applying the 5 R’s of zero waste you can give yourself a structure to help make changes to your habits and lifestyle. They are
Refuse • Reduce • Reuse • Recycle • Rot
